A major landslip on the East Coast has carried away a large stretch of road between Wairoa and Gisborne.

The Gisborne District Council posted a video of the slip, showing a long length of road that had been swept downhill into a valley on Tuesday.

The council said it happened on Tiniroto Road, around 20km from the SH2 roundabout. This is the same location as the landslide caused by Cyclone Bola that formed a lake referred to as Lake French, it added.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said the section of road between Rockhill Rd and Parikanapa Rd is unpassable.

"Anyone needing to travel between Wairoa and Gisborne is advised they will need to use State Highway 2," they said.

The council said no one has been isolated as a result of the landslide and a geotech risk assessment will be carried out on Wednesday morning.

Viewers were shocked by the video, with one saying "region can't catch a break".

"Omg that is massive. Hard for the locals. Glad no one was on the road!" another commented on Facebook.
