A behind-the-scenes look into Auckland's filthiest restaurants has revealed the worst-graded places to eat in the city.
With a population of 1.6 million, and growing, and a reputation for having a vast range of delicious eateries, the recent state of these restaurants might just put you off eating out.
Twenty-six restaurants received D grades from Auckland Council inspectors over the past three months but have since all attained A grades.
Some of the various breaches identified during the recent visits included not following prescribed procedures, poor cleaning, hygiene and food storage, pest control issues and deficient temperature control.
Hai Phong Vietnamese in Northcote received an E grade, which means there were critical food safety risks including cockroach infestations, dirty and unhygienic premises and cross contamination. They have since attained an A grade.
During a restaurant inspection, photos are taken of some of the appalling conditions kitchens are in. The latest photos released to Newshub by Auckland Council of a random, unnamed selection of restaurants include evidence of cockroach infestations, a filthy sink and microwave and grimy, unclean floors.
In other images, a large bowl of what looks like wet fry-batter can be seen uncovered and unrefrigerated sitting beside the deep fryers, and a bucket of wet food with mouldy bread in it can be seen sandwiched between two fridges.
