The Lindis Pass in the Southern Alps is blocked following a fatal crash between a car and a motorcycle.
The crash happened near the summit at about 8:30am and police confirmed shortly before 1pm the motorcyclist died at the scene.
The driver and sole occupant of the car received moderate injuries and was taken to hospital.
Police said in a statement motorists are advised to take an alternate route, as the road is expected to be closed for some time.
The circumstances of the crash are under investigation.
