Two pedestrians injured in Auckland's Avondale Christmas Parade released from hospital

Two pedestrians who were injured at an Auckland Christmas parade last weekend have been released from hospital.

They were hit by a slow-moving Burger Fuel-branded car on Saturday morning at the Avondale Christmas Parade.

Police have launched an investigation with Auckland City's District Prevention Manager Inspector Jacqui Whittaker saying it's "fortunate" both pedestrians didn't sustain serious injuries.

It's still unclear exactly what happened, but Insp Whittaker said the investigation will figure that out.

Local board member Catherine Farmer said the accident sparked a "general melee", which saw the three occupants of the vehicle - two of them children - attacked by members of the public.

Initial reporting from the parade suggested the people in the car were dragged from the vehicle, but Insp Whittaker confirmed they were assaulted whilst still seated.

The New Zealand Herald said the crowd were jumping on the bonnet and smashing their fists on it, with Māori wardens holding them back.

Insp Whittaker said the vehicle involved is also being examined as part of the investigation to establish the exact cause of this incident.

"Police continue to ask anyone who witnessed these events, or captured footage of it occurred, and have yet to speak with us to get in touch," Insp Whittaker said.

"Please contact police by calling our 105 phone service, or by going online to https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105 and using 'Update My Report'. Please reference the file number 231126/1537."
