Auckland beaches unsafe to swim at after heavy rain

First it was the rain, and now the sewage that inevitably pours into the sea after a storm that has killed off any chance of spending the day at an Auckland beach.

Friday's heavy rain was followed by Safeswim deeming nearly every beach in New Zealand's biggest city as unsafe to swim in.

There are red or black flags on every beach bar one from Red Beach in the north to Kawaka Bay, Torkar Bay in the south and Fosters Bay in the west.

Beaches in Waiheke have also been red-flagged.

The Safeswim website warns there is a very high risk of illness and not to swim at the red or black-flagged beaches.

Beaches with a red flag have a high risk of illness following wastewater overflow and black flags indicate a very high risk.

The website says: "Wastewater overflows occur when wastewater (sewage) spills out from gully traps, manholes, engineered overflow points or pump stations. It then flows into backyards or waterways and the sea."

Safeswim says most of the beaches around Auckland have faecal contamination levels that exceed the health guidelines.

Popular North Shore beaches Mairangi Bay, Castor Bay, Milford and Narrow Neck are black-flagged, as are Mission Bay, Kohimarama and St Helliers.

Most of the other beaches are red-flagged.

Any Aucklanders who are not put off by the weather and who do fancy a swim can head out west where most of the beaches are still safe to swim at.
