Australian bushfires could cause hazy skies, colourful sunsets across NZ

There are warnings of hazy skies and unusually colourful sunsets in NZ as plumes of smoke drift across the Tasman Sea.

Bushfires in Australia are sending "huge plumes" of smoke across the Tasman, which NIWA says could lead to dramatic skies over the next week.

Crews are responding to dozens of fires in Queensland, while The Guardian reports there are 63 blazes burning across New South Wales, including 15 that are yet to be contained.

A giant out-of-control bushfire in northern New South Wales has caused its own weather warnings.

The Duck Creek Pilliga forest blaze is believed to have already burned through 130,000 hectares and is causing concern for nearby towns.

New South Wales Rural Fire Service says a "fire generated thunderstorm" has formed, causing dangerous fire behaviours.

More than 450 firefighters and other personnel were working to control the fires in New South Wales.
