A police chase in Christchurch on Friday afternoon ended in multiple vehicles being damaged, including a cop car and motorbike.

The chase went through suburbs just south of the CBD, ending in a cul-de-sac.

Christchurch Metro Commander Supt Lane Todd confirmed a man has been arrested.

"About 2:30pm, police saw a vehicle on Hazeldean Rd carrying out a sustained loss of traction and signalled for it to stop," Todd said in a statement.

"The vehicle allegedly drove into a police motorcycle, causing minor damage, and fled.

"A pursuit was authorised and a short time later officers stopped the vehicle near the intersection of Longfellow and Millar Sts."

Todd said the offending vehicle also allegedly hit a police car twice during the chase, as well as two parked cars.

While extensive damaged was caused, "thankfully nobody was injured", Todd said.

"The alleged driver was taken into custody at the scene. He will appear in Christchurch District Court on Wednesday, January 3 facing a number of driving-related charges."
