As Christmas nears, Customs NZ is preparing for a busy season ahead, already catching a large quantity of methamphetamine disguised as presents.

Customs said a 44-year-old woman, who originated from the United States, recently attempted to smuggle almost seven kilograms of methamphetamine in her luggage, concealed as Christmas gifts.

After an x-ray, biosecurity officers noticed inconsistencies and referred her to Customs which after inspecting her luggage found 6.7 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden in three presents.

Chief Customs Officer Ben Wells said this seizure demonstrates the importance of collaboration between government agencies at the border to disrupt drug smuggling.

"We know the devastating impact methamphetamine and other drugs have on our communities. Every drug detection helps keep our communities safer and we remain vigilant in stopping these drugs from crossing our border," he said.

Customs said their frontline officers continue to remain focused on catching smugglers this festive season.
