An east Auckland driver has had a lucky escape after a car crashed into a pole bringing down power lines.
The BMW then smashed through two separate fences before coming to a stop.
A police spokesperson said the two-vehicle crash, on Bucklands Beach Rd, happened just after 4pm.
Troy, a nearby resident, told Newshub he witnessed a man trying to flee the scene.
"I chased him down... and I confronted him and he took a few swings, we had a bit of a scuffle and he knocked me to the ground," Troy said.
"Then he took off again up the road and I chased after him and then a guy ahead of him signalled to me, 'We'll take him down together' - so we rushed him and took him down on the grass, and held him until the police arrived.
"My kids walk along here, this is right outside a school... I didn't want him to get away. I wanted him to be held responsible."
The driver was treated by Hāto Hone/St John staff and the local power company worked to restore electricity to nearby houses.
Investigations into the crash were underway.
