A warning to Hamilton residents of toxic smoke after a boat factory burst into flames has now been lifted.
MasterCraft Boats New Zealand on Te Rapa Road was engulfed in flames and emitting a mass amount of thick black smoke into the sky on Wednesday evening.
An Emergency Alert from Fire and Emergency NZ just after 7pm warned residents that the toxic smoke was "drifting to the east" and heading towards Rototuna and Chartwell.
People were asked to stay inside, close all windows and doors, and wait for further instructions.
A video of the blaze showed several people watching on from across the street, along with staff members outside the building.
Waikato Police confirmed they were in attendance along with FENZ, and recieved several reports of the blaze at around 5:30pm.
When crews arrived, they found a building well involved in fire, a FENZ spokesperson said.
FENZ Northern Communication Centre Shift Manager Michael Anderson said eight fire trucks, one ladder truck, one Command Unit, two water tankers and five support vehicles were at the scene.
A witness told Newshub they heard a "few explosions" come from the building before the fire started.
The fire was extinguished just after 9pm on Wednesday and the stay inside warning for residents of Rototuna and Chartwell has now been lifted, a FENZ spokesperson said in an update.
Four fire trucks remain on the scene and an investigation into the cause of the fire will take place on Thursday.
Police are asking motorists to avoid the Te Rapa area until further notice.
Meanwhile, firefighters in Christchurch are working to battle a large scrub fire that is spreading south.
FENZ said they were alerted to the blaze in Islington just before 7pm.
