Israel-Hamas conflict: Pro-Palestine protesters douse US Consulate in red paint

  • 12/12/2023

Pro-Palestine protesters have again doused the US Consulate in Auckland in red paint on Tuesday morning.

Footage captured by Newshub shows the front doors of the Consulate covered in red paint.

The group responsible for the protest was Tamaki for Palestine who said in a statement the action "represents the blood Israel has spilled in its genocide against the Palestinian people, which is the US war machine is facilitating".

This is the same group that doused the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Auckland office and US Consulate in red paint in November. The group also vandalised the buildings of seven politicians including Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's Botany office and ACT leader David Seymour's Epsom office.

Auckland City Central Area Commander Inspector Grant Tetzlaff said police are making enquiries into vandalism at the US Consulate.

He said their enquiries are at a "very early stage" to determine the full circumstances and urge anyone with information to come forward and speak to them.

"We ask anyone with information or footage to please contact Police via our 105 phone service or online at https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105/. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111."

The protest comes after Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters brought a motion to the House last Thursday that outlined steps toward a ceasefire, which the Labour Party put forward amendments for, wanting the ceasefire to happen immediately.

On the same day, Labour MP Damien O'Connor said, "No person with any ounce of moral courage can see this as anything but horrific - nothing more than a genocide".

Tamaki for Palestine called Peters' remarks of steps towards a ceasefire "disappointingly moderate".

"The New Zealand Government must muster its full political and diplomatic weight against the US and Israeli militaries' death machines and push for a free Palestine," the group said.

"Months of heartfelt protests across the motu including marches, vigils, sit-ins and blockades represent popular support for Palestinian liberation. Tangata whenua see the resonance with the struggles for tino rangatiratanga in Aotearoa.

"Tauiwi see the parallels with the struggles against imperialism in their respective homelands. Our politicians must catch up with the will of the people."
