A man arrested after allegedly damaging a Treaty display at Te Papa will be held in custody until a bail hearing later this week.

The man was arrested on Monday after the English version of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi was defaced with spray paint and a power tool on the fourth level of the Museum.

The protesters, from the group Te Waka Hourua, were demanding the English version of the Treaty be taken down and a "true translation" of the copy put up in its place.

The display shows English and te reo Māori versions of the Treaty and its information panels highlight the differences.

Police said 12 people were arrested following the protest.

One man is facing two charges of obstruction of police and intentional damage. He is to be held in custody until Thursday for a bail hearing. Police are opposing bail.

Three other people who were charged with breaching bail were dealt with administratively and did not appear in court.

The group Te Hau Kōmaru National Waka Hourua Charitable Trust said that there is no relationship between the protest group called Te Waka Hourua and any waka hourua organisations in Aotearoa.
