State Highway 2 between Napier and Wairoa has reopened on Tuesday morning after being blocked by a slip.
The highway was closed after heavy rainfall in the region over the weekend caused a slip and a large rockfall covered the road between Pūtōrino and Kotemaori.
It's the second time in a little more than a week the road was closed after a person fatally crashed into a slip near Wairoa on November 26.
Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency said the road reopened ahead of schedule at 6:30am following an early morning safety assessment.
The stretch of state highway was opened for three hours until 8pm on Monday and was closed overnight.
An onsite geotechnical assessment on Tuesday morning has been carried out and confirmed no fresh material has come down.
The road will be down to one lane and the slip site has been barricaded.
Waka Kotahi said barriers at Whirinaki and Wairoa have now been lifted and there will be traffic management in place, including traffic lights and a speed restriction.
Waka Kotahi Hawke's Bay system manager Martin Colditz said the traffic flow was steady during Monday's closing and he's expecting a lot of traffic on Tuesday.
"Please expect delays and drive to the conditions through the slip site."
