Weather: Hot day for north, showers for south in lead up to Christmas

It's going to be another hot day for most people across the motu with fine weather for much of the North Island and scattered cloud and rain for areas in the south.

Settled hot weather can be expected in the north with highs likely reaching into the late twenties for several areas.

In the upper North Island, Kaitaia can expect a high of 25C, Whangārei 24C and Auckland 26C, according to Metservice.

Napier and Hamilton meanwhile are going to be stinking hot with highs of 28C and 27C respectively.

Moving down the country, a weak front is pushing north bringing cooler temperatures in the south and eventually east, according to WeatherWatch.

But that doesn't mean areas won't get hot. Inland parts of the upper South Island and the Mackenzie Country will likely climb into the late twenties as well.

The lower half of the South Island, meanwhile, can expect some rain, especially for Southland and Fiordland in the morning.

Elsewhere a few showers creep in this afternoon with isolated heat showers possible around Molesworth in the evening.

Unfortunately, Friday and the weekend aren't looking as nice with isolated showers mainly in the afternoon and evening for the North Island.

While the south can expect showers and cloudy periods.
