A major Northland highway has reopened after a serious crash injured two people, one critically, on Tuesday morning.

State Highway 14 near Tangowahine Settlement Rd in Tangowahine was closed for around an hour and 20 minutes and reopened at 9:20am, according to New Zealand Transport Agency. Tangowahine is about 45 minutes west of Whangārei.

Police said the single-vehicle crash was reported just after 7am and two people were injured.

"One person is currently in a critical condition and the second in a serious condition. Emergency services remain at the scene," a police spokesperson said.

Hato Hone St John said it sent a helicopter to the crash.

A St John spokesperson told Newshub they responded with an ambulance, two rapid response vehicles and an operations manager.

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised and will examine the scene.
