A 15-year-old has been confirmed as one of the two people killed in a rally car crash in Paparoa, Northland on Sunday.
Both the driver and co-driver of a rally car were killed when it crashed during the Arcadia Road Rallysprint.
Emergency services were notified of the crash shortly before 2pm but the competitors were both dead before they arrived.
The other man was 35 years old.
Police would not confirm if the 15-year-old was the driver.
Speaking to AM this morning, Motorsport New Zealand Chief Executive Elton Goonan described the incident as a "tragedy".
Goonan described both competitors as "relatively experienced". He said they'd both been in the sport for a few years.
"They weren't novices that's for sure, which is always a concern for the sport."
The Serious Crash Unit and WorkSafe are both investigating and Goonan said they would provide all information needed.
Motorsport New Zealand is also carrying out an investigation.
Goonan said at this early stage, nothing is jumping out that could've been done any differently.
"We think it's one of those unfortunate incidents that has just happened."
