An estimated 700 people have joined a hīkoi at Waitangi today.
The hīkoi, organised by northern community leader Reuben Taipari, arrived at Te Tii Marae before marching to the upper grounds.
The masses were heard chanting "hīkoi mo te Tiriti" (march for the Treaty) among other chants. There were also various waiata sung.
When it arrived on the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, the crowd listened to a church service being held at Te Whare Rūnanga.
It followed the annual dawn service at Te Whare Rūnanga which was attended by various dignitaries including Māori leaders and politicians such as Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and ACT leader David Seymour. NZ First leader Winston Peters did not attend as he is heading to the Pacific as part of his duties as Foreign Minister.
