A huge fireball has been spotted hurtling across the sky in the South Island.

The fireball was captured entering the atmosphere above south Canterbury and north Otago around 9pm on Wednesday.

A video shows the bright white, yellow and green light falling from the night sky.

A fireball is a bright meteor that could result in a meteorite falling to the ground.

Fireballs Aotearoa, a group that aims to recover freshly fallen meteorites, said it is assessing its data to determine whether a meteorite has fallen in the area.

It comes as a nationwide search dubbed 'The Great Meteorite Search' was launched on Monday to find meteorites in New Zealand.

Meteorologist James Scott believes there are several out there waiting to be found.

"New Zealand has had nine known meteorites in the last 160 years, of which only two have been seen to 'fall'. The rest have been found by members of the public by accident," he told Newshub earlier.

"Nine meteorites in 160 years is actually a poor haul. We predict that NZ should have received three to four each year. The problem is that they are not seen, or land in areas that are not realistic to search."

Fireballs NZ said any meteorites identified will be studied to help further understand our planet and solar system. The finder and their story will also be credited.
