Police are providing an update on the investigation into the body in Auckland's Gulf Harbour earlier this week.
A local recreational fisherman discovered the body inside multiple plastic bags while out fishing on Tuesday afternoon.
A homicide investigation was then launched on Thursday after a post-mortem examination was completed. Police had not been able to confirm the identity of the victim but said she is a female of Asian descent, possibly Chinese, and small in stature.
Acting Detective Inspector Tim Williams said police's priority was to identify the body and notify the victim's next of kin, while also investigating what led to her death. He will be updating the media soon.
