Second man arrested in relation to deadly Gisborne brawl has charge upgraded

The 25-year-old man arrested yesterday in relation to the deadly Gisborne brawl has had his charge upgraded.

The man has now been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, following another man facing the same charge.

It comes after two men died in the altercation involving 100 people on Lytton St on Saturday.

They were Kane Wiremu Te Paa, 30, of Wainuiomata, and Chrysler Stevens-Mark, 21, of Gisborne.

The party had been a 21st birthday celebration for Stevens-Mark.

"The upgraded charge relates to injuries sustained by one of the victims currently in Gisborne Hospital," Detective Inspector Dave de Lange said.

Police said the man is jointly charged with the 29-year-old who was taken into custody earlier this week.

"Further charges will be considered as the investigation into events on Lytton Street, Gisborne on Saturday night progresses."

The 25-year-old is due to appear in the Gisborne District Court on Wednesday afternoon.

"Police will continue to have a highly visible presence in Gisborne as reassurance patrols are carried out, and work continues to support Kane and Chrysler's families as they plan their loved one's final journeys," Det Insp Lange said.

Police would like to hear from anyone who was at the party on Saturday evening, or anyone who has photos or video of the party or altercation.
