Tauranga Hospital is in lockdown and armed police are present.
Armed officers could be seen at the entrance off Cameron Road.
A police spokesperson told Newshub the hospital had been locked down "as a precaution" after a threat was made over the phone.
"Staff are responding to the area to assess any threat and provide reassurance."
Tauranga Hospital said in a statement the hospital will remain in lockdown until the situation is resolved.
The Emergency Department remains open and patients who have appointments at the hospital should still attend at their scheduled time.
