MetService is projecting cold conditions for the rest of the weekend with most of New Zealand experiencing below-average temperatures.
Showers are also expected to linger about the southwest of the country for the next few days.
"Light southwesterly winds and clear skies have allowed the temperatures to drop overnight, with much of inland Canterbury waking up to frost," MetService said on Saturday.
Those cold temperatures were expected to hit the central and eastern North Island on Sunday morning.
Gisborne and Napier, for example, were expected to drop to 8C overnight, MetService said.
"If you're heading off to those St Patrick's Day parades in Auckland, Wellington or even down towards Christchurch, most of the time it's looking dry and fine - but you might need those extra layers," MetService meteorologist John Law said of Sunday's weather. "Especially for the end of the day."
