An earthquake of 4.5-magnitude struck Bay of Plenty early on Wednesday, GeoNet says.
The quake, located 50km north of Te Kaha, was at a depth of 17km, GeoNet added.
It was originally registered as 4.8-magnitude but subsequently downgraded.
"The quake may have been felt in Gisborne, Matawai, Murupara, Opotiki, Rotorua, Ruatoria, Tauranga, Te Araroa, Te Aroha, Te Kaha, Tokomaru Bay, Tokoroa, Tolaga Bay, Wairoa, Whakaari/White Island, Whakatane, Whangamata and surrounding localities," GeoNet said.
Earlier in the morning, at about 1:50am, Taupō was also struck by a "weak" 3.5-magnitude quake.
