Cloudy periods and showers are on the cards for much of the country for Anzac Day this year, MetService forecasts.
Heading into Thursday, the forecaster said much of the country should expect wetter weather. Several watches and warnings are in place.
It will be a chilly start for Canterbury with temperatures of 5C while Wellington is about 14C, and Auckland is facing a 10C start to the public holiday.
Throughout the day, the wet weather is expected to move up north hitting Taranaki. Northland and Auckland will be mostly fine but can expect cloudy periods and wind.
Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Taupō are a similar story with only isolated showers and clouds.
Meanwhile, it will be a wet day for Waitomo, Taumarunui, Taranaki, Whanganui and Taihape with clouds and scattered rain, possibly turning heaving on Thursday night.
Manawatū to Wellington is in for mostly fine weather but the capital should expect isolated showers and strong winds of up to 90km/h.
Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa are in for a fine day of commemorations.
Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury and north Otago meanwhile are in for clouds, rain and heavy winds.
Fiordland, Southland, Otago and the Canterbury High Country are all in for winds with the heaviest rain expected in the ranges of Westland.
Canterbury High Country will be battered by severe gales reaching as much as 120km/h in exposed areas.
The rest of Otago and Southland can expect clouds and scattered rain in the morning and evening.
Meanwhile, Buller, Westland and Fiordland are in for periods of rain tomorrow and possible thunderstorms.
