An earthquake of 5.1-magnitude struck the South Island's West Coast on Saturday night, GeoNet says.
The quake, which struck 5km northwest of Greymouth just before 11:40pm, was at a depth of 5km and caused "strong" shaking, GeoNet added. It was originally registered as magnitude-4.4 but later upgraded.
"Loud! Not too wobbly but heard it coming big time," one person said of the quake on X.
"Bumpy ride," another wrote.
A short time later, at 1:20am, the same area was struck by a "light" 3.9-magnitude quake.
