A magnitude-4.9 earthquake has struck in between the North and South Islands on Tuesday night.
GeoNet said originally it was recorded as a M5.2 quake, but that was later revised.
More than 12,000 have reported feeling either "weak" or "light" shaking on GeoNet's felt reports website.
The quake hit at about 7:23pm, with its epicentre 70km southwest of Waverley in Taranaki. It struck at a depth of about 80km.
"First shake I've felt here in Nelson for a good wee while," one person commented on GeoNet's Twitter post.
"Felt that here in Wellington," another said.
It comes after a 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck west of Kāwhia on Saturday, the same day a 4.3-magnitude quake struck off the Kāpiti Coast.
