Police have released the name of the man who died after running into the sea at Mt Maunganui on 15 April.
He was John Rawiri Piripi Pitihira, aged 37, from Mount Maunganui.
Pitihira was one of three men who fled police after an alleged burglary and ran into the sea to avoid arrest. His body was found on Omanu Beach about 5am on 15 April.
Police said they were continuing to provide support to Pitihira's whānau.
A post mortem has been completed and the results have been referred to the coroner.
Police have also referred it to the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA).
