A wanted man has been arrested after a "period of negotiation" with officers in Christchurch.
Police said the Armed Offenders Squad was called to the suburb of Mairehau on Monday night.
Christchurch Metro Area Commander Supt Lane Todd said appropriate precautions were taken to ensure the safety of nearby residents while officers responded.
The 41-year-old man was subsequently arrested on charges including threatening to kill, assault and kidnapping.
A scene guard remained in place and an examination would take place on Tuesday, Todd said.
"We would like to thank those affected for their support and appreciate it may have been unsettling."
