A roadworker in Auckland's Remuera is in a critical condition after being run over and crushed by a truck on Wednesday night.
The man, who is suffering leg and pelvic crush injuries, was rushed to Auckland Hospital just after the crash, which took place around 10pm.
Police say the truck left the scene immediately after the man was run over.
Senior Sergeant Kuhrt Wieneke spoke with Newshub at the scene of the crash on Victoria Ave, where new asphalt was being put down by roadworkers.
"What we know is a large truck rolled down the hill and collected one of the workers here, causing critical injuries to him," he said.
"He has been taken through to Auckland City Hospital with some leg and pelvic crush injuries. He has been described as being in a critical condition."
Snr Sgt Wieneke said police detectives "know it wasn't intentional."
"We've got our Serious Crash Unit here investigating, they are going to map it out, take some photos. We've got the crime squad and some detectives."
"We are going to conduct some interviews with some witnesses as well as the driver of the truck."
In a statement from police on Thursday morning, it was confirmed the truck immediately left the scene after running the man over.
However, police said they have located the vehicle and driver in Papatoetoe.
"The pedestrian remains in Auckland City Hospital after sustaining critical injuries in the incident," a spokesperson said.
Investigations are underway into the cause of the crash.
