Firefighters have been called back to Auckland's Gulf Harbour Country Club on Tuesday evening, after a massive fire destroyed the abandoned venue overnight.

Five crews were called to the gutted building on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula at about 6:30pm due to a "bit of smoke showing", a spokesperson from Fire and Emergency told Newshub.

There is no fire, they added, but crews are outside the clubhouse building dampening down hotspots in the roof cavity.

There are fears that the building could collapse.

"We're just out here dealing with that," the spokesperson said.

Crews were still dousing hotspots as of 9pm.

More than 50 firefighters tackled the overnight blaze at the clubhouse, which burned for more than six hours.

Three days ago, the nearby golf shop also went up in flames.

Shaun Pilgram, Fire and Emergency's Assistant Area Commander, told Newshub it's unknown what caused the fire.

He also said investigators have been told that even once fully extinguished, the building will likely be too unstable to enter.
