Several schools in Gisborne have come out of lockdown, following a threat on Thursday afternoon.

Families and parents were initially ordered to stay away from the area.

Lytton High School, Riverdale Primary School and Campion College were all put into lockdown, with Lytton High School posting to Facebook, telling parents to "not come to school".

"We hope to have it resolved quickly and will contact you with more information as soon as possible. All children are safe in their classrooms."

Riverdale Primary School said in a post police have asked staff and students to remain in their classrooms "until further notice".

"We are all safe. We ask that you do not come and pick up your children at this stage. We will keep you updated as soon as we know anymore."

Meanwhile, Campion College also took to Facebook, confirming their school had gone into lockdown following advice from police."We are safe and will be in touch. No parents to come onsite."

"Gisborne Police will be visible in the Riverdale, Gisborne area following a report of a threat to a nearby school," police said in a statement.

"There are cordons in the area near Nelson Road to redirect traffic and the school has entered a self-imposed lockdown."

"At this stage police are responding as a precaution."

An updated statement from Lytton High School just after 4pm reads: "Our lockdown is now lifted. A police presence will remain, but your students can leave as normal."

"If you are collecting them, please be careful as traffic will be heavy. Please do not linger."

"Buses will be collecting students as soon as possible and dropping them off as usual."
