Horrifying details are emerging about a brawl outside an Auckland school on Thursday, during which a machete was pulled out.

Images of the fight, which took place near Ōnehunga High School (OHS) on Pleasant St, were circulating on social media.

One post alleged a group waited outside the school until students emerged.

OHS principal Shameen Hayat said on Friday the "serious incident" involved some students and members of the public.

"All our students are safe. We are working with the police; they are fully investigating the matter and the MoE (Ministry of Education) is supporting our response," Hayat said in a letter to families.

"We take the safety of our students seriously and I would like to reassure you that the school is safe.

"Having a safe and orderly environment, where we look after each is our top priority."

Police confirmed emergency services were called to the fight at about 3:20pm on Thursday.

No one has been arrested so far and investigations were ongoing, as the group had dispersed when officers arrived.
