A person has died after being struck by a train in Ōhau, Horowhenua, police have confirmed.
Emergency services were called to the scene near State Highway 1 around 5:10pm.
A KiwiRail spokesperson told Newshub there were 55 passengers on board the Great Journeys NZ's Northern Explorer scenic train.
It stopped just south of Levin on its way to Wellington.
"The incident has also affected the Capital Connection between Wellington and Palmerston North," the spokesperson said.
"We are currently making arrangements to allow passengers on both services to complete their journeys."
Police said State Highway 1 has now reopened after a scene examination took place.
"Those who were on the train and the victim's family are being offered support," a spokesperson said.
