A police investigation is continuing on Thursday following a shooting in south Auckland on Wednesday night.

In an update on Thursday morning, Detective Inspector Shaun Vickers, Counties Manukau CIB, said officers responded to reports of an "altercation" between two people at a motel on Great South Road at around 6:10pm, where a firearm was discharged.

The Allenby Park Hotel in Papatoetoe was in lockdown as officers swarmed the property, with a section of Great South Rd closed for a period of time.

One man was detained at the scene but it was not clear if he was linked to the shooting.

"The person believed to be involved has then left the area on foot," Det Insp Vickers said.

"At this stage, while they have not been located, Police are following positive lines of enquiry, which includes reviewing a significant amount of available CCTV footage in and around the area.

"Thankfully, no injuries have been reported in relation to this matter."

Police enquiries will continue on Thursday and as a result, the Papatoetoe community can expect to see an increased presence of officers in the area.

"We encourage anyone else who was in the area or has information to assist who have not yet spoken to us to please get in touch," Vickers added.

You can contact police via the 105 phone service or online at https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105, referencing file number 240522/0646. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

One woman whose daughter lives at the hotel complex said she rushed to the scene to check on her welfare.

"My daughter's in there - she's got a newborn baby. She told us that there was a shooting," she told Newshub.

"I'm just waiting to see what happened, to go and check on her."

The woman told Newshub her daughter heard gunshots and arguments.

"She said that there were police dogs and cops [were] busting down doors."

Insp Kerry Watson said police received a complaint about a man having a gun.

"As we were driving to the location it was updated that shots had been fired. So we arrived and we entered quite promptly because we were worried about the safety of those persons inside."

Watson said officers cleared several rooms, and soon after discovered the shooter had fled just before police arrived.

"The immediate scene is safe," he stressed. "The residents can go about their business as normal. More information as it comes to light will be provided."

He said it was a "long-barrel firearm".

An investigation is underway and officers will continue to speak with witnesses at the Allenby Park Hotel, he said.
