Police won't say if Dunedin teens involved in 'tragic' stabbing were known to each other

Police say the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old boy in Ōtepoti/Dunedin on Thursday was a "tragic event" and that officers arrived on the scene quickly.

Otago Coastal Area Commander Inspector Marty Gray told reporters on Friday that investigators are still figuring out what led to the attack.

"This was a tragic event involving two very young people."

A male teen was taken into custody immediately after the stabbing, police said on Thursday. He was then charged with murder at the Dunedin Youth Court on Friday.

Police's thoughts are with the boy's family and friends, Insp Gray said, and are wrapping support around them.

The stabbing happened at the Bus Hub Dunedin on Great King St, at 3pm on Thursday.

Enere McLaren-Taana, a student at Trinity Catholic College, died from his wounds after he was rushed to Dunedin Hospital.

Insp Gray told reporters that police know antisocial behaviour is an issue at the bus hub.

"And our staff have been working closely with Dunedin City Council, Otago Regional Council, the Education Department, iwi, and other partners to suppress some of that activity."

He said extra CCTV cameras have been installed in the area, but didn't reveal if the pair were known to each other.
