The 33-year-old man shot dead in Ponsonby on the weekend is being remembered as a "friend to many".
Robert Sidney Horne was killed while at a bar with a group of friends on Sunday night.
The suspected gunman Killer Beez gang member Hone Kay-Selwyn, 31, was found dead in rural Taupō on Tuesday after police launched a manhunt.
Friends and family have been posting tributes online. One tribute includes a video that appears to show Horne helping a homeless man and urging others to help him as well.
In a post on Facebook Horne's whānau confirmed his death and paid tribute to him.
"It is with deep sadness we announce the tragic and sudden passing of our on, brother, moko, uncle and friend to many," they said.
"Robert is currently with the coroner and we will expect to have him lying at Parawera Marae tomorrow afternoon/evening.
"Robert will lay at Parawera Marae until Thursday then will be taken to Ngāi Tūpoto ki Motukaraka Marae until Saturday then laid to rest at Mātai Urupa.
"Please be patient as our whānau prepare our boy to bring him home."
A long-time colleague of Horne, who did not want to be named, told Stuff he was a "very, very kind person" with a "big heart".
Detective Inspector Chris Barry also paid tribute to Horne on Wednesday.
"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Horne following this tragic incident," he said.
"The family of Mr Horne are understandably devastated at what has occurred and have requested privacy at this difficult time."
On Tuesday a warrant was issued for Hone Kay-Selwyn's arrest for the unlawful possession of a firearm.
Det Insp Barry said officers were following up on a report in Taupō when they received a tip-off that Kay-Selwyn was at a property in Broadlands.
They found him dead while investigating. It's unclear exactly when he died, but Det Insp Barry said it was sometime on Tuesday.
Investigations into both deaths are ongoing.
He said Kay-Selwyn's death is being treated as unexplained.
