Three people are recovering in hospital after a serious quad bike accident earlier this week in a remote part of Tarawera.

A group had been heading towards a remote hunting hut on quad bikes on Sunday night when one of the bikes rolled.

The three people on board were thrown about 40m down the cliff, sustaining moderate to serious injuries.

Greenlea Rescue Helicopter and Hawke's Bay Rescue Helicopter were both dispatched to airlift the injured to hospital.

Along with Hawke's Bay Land Search and Rescue, emergency workers stabilised the patients before taking them up the cliff face.

"The patients were in a rugged and isolated area, with steep cliffs and dense bush surrounding them," said a spokesperson for Greenlea Rescue Helicopter.

The three patients were then taken a further 600m by quake bike to the two helicopters awaiting them.

Hawke's Bay Rescue Helicopter took one patient to hospital, while Greenlea Rescue Helicopter took the other two to Hastings Hospital.
