Weather: Rotorua Speedway turns into waterfall amid heavy rain

Rotorua Speedway's stadium seating turned into a waterfall on Tuesday as heavy rain lashed the region.

Video filmed at 9am showed the speedway flooded as loud water gushed down the stands.

Rob Prior, who filmed the video, told Newshub it was "just incredible to watch".

He shared the flooding on a Rotorua community Facebook page.

"Ideal for speed boat racing," one person said.

"Rotorua surf park?" asked another.

MetService forecast that Rotorua would see showers, some possibly heavy with a risk of thunderstorms, on Tuesday. It said the worst of the wet weather would be clearing on Tuesday night.

But it comes as flooding and rising river levels caused disruption across the country on Tuesday, as heavy rain and thunderstorms moved south.

MetService has seven warnings and watches in place across the country.

The east coast of the North Island is being worst hit, with two orange heavy rain warnings in place for Hawke's Bay.

MetService warned further rain was possible through to late Thursday, so its warning may be extended.

"Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous."

A heavy rain watch is also in place for Tairāwhiti Gisborne.

"A period of heavy rain, and amounts may approach warning criteria. Thunderstorms possible this afternoon," the weather agency said.

Meanwhile, there is also a heavy rain watch in the Kaikōura Ranges and strong wind watch in place for North Taranaki.
