A woman is facing charges after allegedly driving drunk the wrong way on the Dunedin motorway before smashing into a car with an elderly couple.
Dramatic footage supplied to the NZ Herald shows a car speeding north on the southbound lanes of the motorway.
The footage shows the headlights of an oncoming car appear and seconds later the wrong-way car smashes into it.
Police were called just before 11am on Tuesday after reports of a car travelling the wrong way on the motorway and colliding with another car.
A spokesperson said the driver of the offending car appeared to be uninjured and the elderly couple in the other car suffered minor injuries.
Both cars were significantly damaged.
The driver of the offending car was a 42-year-old woman who was charged with dangerous driving and excess breath alcohol causing injury.
She is scheduled to appear in Dunedin District Court on May 14.
