A woman in her 60s is recovering after several dogs reportedly attacked her in Tairua on Wednesday.

Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust said one of their crews flew to the scene at about 8am, where the woman was treated immediately by the on-board doctor.

Simon Thorpe, the attending officer on board, said it's believed that four dogs were involved in the attack on the woman.

She was flown by helicopter to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.

Thames-Coromandel District Council said in a statement it's investigating what happened.

It follows a string of dog attacks across the motu in recent months.

In April, packs of roaming dogs were terrorising people in south Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland. They killed dozens of cats in the suburb of Conifer Grove, witnesses said.

And in November, Kaipara District Mayor Craig Jepson warned the worrying surge of dog attacks in Northland/Tai Tokerau needed to be a top priority for all councils.
