Body found in search for missing swimmer at Whanganui River

Police say they have found a body while searching for a swimmer reported missing from the Whanganui River.

The shirtless man was last seen swimming near Dublin Bridge about 8.20am on Friday, but failed to surface.

The Police National Dive Squad found the body about 2pm on Saturday.

Police have confirmed the identity of the man and are notifying next-of-kin.

They said the death was not believed to be suspicious and had been referred to the coroner.

A rāhui banning recreational activity and food gathering remains in place, extending from the walk bridge at Upokongaro to the mouth of the river.
