A man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a police officer and fleeing, before crashing to a stop at a road works site in Auckland - the second fleeing driver incident which has ended in a crash this week.
Police told Newshub the incident began in Massey about 10pm on Wednesday.
Officers were speaking to the driver of a vehicle near Royal Rd when they observed what appeared to be drug utensils on the passenger seat.
"The driver has then assaulted a police officer and failed to remain, leaving the area at speed towards Avondale," Insp Kelly Farrant said.
"The Police Air Support Unit, Eagle, has responded and observed the vehicle travelling southbound on State Highway 20 before exiting the motorway. Police deployed a tyre deflation device and the vehicle has crashed into a road maintenance vehicle on Beach Road.
"At this stage, the driver has attempted to leave the area on foot, however has been taken into custody a short time later.
"Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported to the officer, or any road workers who were in the area at the time."
Farrant said charges against the man were currently being considered.
Earlier this week, one person died and another was left critically injured after a car crashed into a tree at high-speed while fleeing from police.
