A woman in Ōtautahi/Christchurch was slapped with a $150 fine on Wednesday morning for driving with ice covering her vehicle's windscreen.

Senior Sergeant Paul Robertson said the woman was driving her kids to school when she was pulled over in Wigram about 8:30am.

"An officer noticed a vehicle swerving across the centre island, to the kerb on the other side of the road," Robertson said.

Police fined her for driving with "an obscured windscreen", he added.

"With winter officially setting in, this is a clear reminder for motorists to think about safe winter driving."

Police urge people to check their car is well-equipped for driving in cold conditions - by having a spare tyre and checking lights, brakes, and wipers are all working.

Robertson said drivers need to safely defrost their windscreens if iced over.

"It is also important to allow extra time before your drive, in order to check over your vehicle, and safely drive to the road and weather conditions."

According to the AA, pouring cold water over a small amount of ice should clear it. Never pour warm or hot water on your car's windscreen.
