A woman in her 80s was seriously injured after a man broke into her West Auckland house and assaulted her overnight.
Police said they responded to reports of an aggravated burglary at the address on Dellwood Avenue in Henderson around 2:20am on Thursday.
They said the woman - who was the only person at the house - disturbed the intruder, who then assaulted her.
She received injuries to her face that were serious but non-life threatening. She has been discharged from Auckland Hospital and is being looked after by family.
The woman's neighbour told Newshub she had lived in the property "for decades".
The police helicopter and dog unit were dispatched after the incident, but the suspect remains on the run.
Police want to hear from anyone in the area on Wednesday night who has CCTV footage or saw anything of note.
Anyone with footage or information that may assist is asked to contact police on 105 or online, using reference file number 240627/3439. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
