Entire Coromandel Peninsula loses power

  • 23/06/2024

Power is being restored to the Coromandel Peninsula after a transformer tripped and knocked out electricity to around 27,000 properties, Transpower says.

"One of our transformers tripped at 8:45am. We have a crew on the way and we will update you here when we know how long it will be until we can get power back up and running," Transpower said on its Facebook page.

It comes as MetService warns of severe weather in the area today.

In an update just before 10am, Transpower said its crew had fixed the fault and Powerco should be able to start restoring supply soon.

"Please have patience with them as they do this work because they have to restore supply safely.

"Thank you for your patience. I know it's not great having power out as you're going about your Sunday morning."

Powerco said it could take up to two hours to restore power.

It comes just days after Northland lost power after a tower fell.
