Dozens of Kiwis have reported feeling a flurry of earthquakes near Wairoa on Tuesday morning.
The three quakes all had the same epicentre - 20km northeast of Wairoa - and struck between 5:57am and 6:24am.
GeoNet said the quakes were magnitude 3.9, 3.2 and 3.6 - described as both "light" and "weak".
More than 30 people reported feeling the 3.9-magnitude quake, which struck at a depth of 24km. One person described the shaking as moderate and the remainder said it felt light or weak.
Eight minutes later, the 3.2-magnitude quake struck 20km deep in the same location. Seven people reported feeling that quake.
The 3.6-magnitude quake at 6:24am was 23km deep. That was felt by 19 people, most of whom said it felt "weak".
