A student living in Auckland University accommodation has been hospitalised with meningococcal disease.

The university has confirmed the student, who was living in Carlaw Park hall of residence, was recently diagnosed with the disease and is being treated in hospital.

"We wish them a full and speedy recovery," a University of Auckland spokesperson said.

Meningococcal disease is an uncommon but serious disease that can lead to meningitis and blood poisoning. Symptoms of the disease look like the flu or a cold but usually worsen quickly.

Auckland University said it is working closely with the Auckland Regional Public Health Service to identify potential close contacts of the student, currently restricted to three people who shared their accommodation.

"At this stage, no further cases of meningococcal disease have been confirmed in that group. The risk to the wider University of Auckland community is therefore considered low," the Auckland spokesperson said.

"The University's top priority is the health, safety and well-being of our staff and students. To protect their privacy, we will not be commenting further."
