Jewellery store owner in serious condition after hammer attack in Papatoetoe, south Auckland

A jewellery store owner is in a serious condition after a hammer attack in Papatoetoe, south Auckland.

Police say they responded to a robbery at the Kolmar Road store, which was reported around 5:45pm on Sunday.

Dairy and Business Owners Group chairperson Sunny Kaushal told Newshub the owner was hit multiple times on the head with a hammer, and was also attacked with a knife.

Police confirmed one person in the store was seriously injured after being assaulted, and was taken to hospital.

While the Eagle helicopter responded, those responsible had already left in a vehicle and haven't been found.

"Police are working to piece together exactly what occurred, we are speaking with a number of witnesses and will conduct a scene examination," Inspector Keki Wilson said in a statement.

"Violent incidents like these rightly cause concern, and Police is committed to holding offenders to account."
