Large fire sends plumes of black smoke into air above Favona, south Auckland

A large fire has been extinguished in south Auckland, however fire crews will remain on site dampening down hotspots for the remainder of the afternoon.

The third-alarm fire broke out at a car wreckers on Titi St,  in Favona, just before 10:30am on Saturday.

The blaze sent thick black smoke into the air, with nearby residents being told to close their doors and windows.

An incident report showed crews from Ōtāhuhu, Ellerslie, Māngere and Papatoetoe were called in.

Assistant Commander Phil Larcombe said 10 fire trucks, four ladder trucks and multiple support vehicles responded to the fire.

"Our crews did a fantastic job to quickly contain, control and then extinguish the fire," he said in an update.

Kaka and Titi Streets had been closed but are expected to reopen shortly.
