One lane has reopened after a fallen tree and large slip closed northbound lanes on a major Auckland highway on Sunday morning.

State Highway 20 was closed northbound after a tree came down between the Neilson St off-ramp and Hillsborough Rd on-ramp early on Sunday morning.

In an update just after 2pm, NZTA said one lane is now open between the Queenstown Road off-ramp and the Queenstown Road bridge on State Highway 20.

"Crews remain working as quickly as possible to open the remaining two lanes. An update will be provided once the road is fully reopened," NZTA said in an update.

A police spokesperson said they received several calls from motorists advising that a large tree was blocking the road at around 1am.

"Police provided traffic management until road closures could be put in place."

Meanwhile, emergency services also attended the scene following a crash at the Neilson St off-ramp, NZTA advised.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said one rapid response unit attended shortly after 7am but was not required.

The off-ramp had partially closed following the crash, but in an update NZTA said it had since been cleared.

However, the highway remained closed due to the large slip and fallen tree.

"Please pass with extra care and expect delays," NZTA warned.

There is a detour in place and motorists are being asked to allow extra time for travel.
